As most of us seek refuge outside the boundaries of the everyday, outside the scale of the so-called normal, the boundaries of this scale are the subject of constant debate. Normal is an illusive and relative term which asks each society to determine what lies within it, and what lies outside. The increasing battle of identities asks us to perpetually examine the term. Design offers us tools which invite us to determine where we wish to place ourselves on that spectrum; some use it to escape their abnormality into the norm, while others use it to escape their normal destiny. Some designers also seek to correct the spectrum itself, as well as the historic diversions it contains, towards a fluid future which avoids the rudimentary definitions of the past. The Freakshow asks the visitors to take a stand and ask: what is normal, who defines it, and how does design seek to influence it.
