Newton’s third law of motion determines that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The Backstage is a visit inside the intestines of the machine which operates the circus. In it, the mechanisms that operate the shows, the people who sew the costumes, the make-up rooms which serve the performers and the ceremonies which precede the performances are revealed. Also unveiled are the costs which feed the escapism we seek: the psychological weight, the mystical space, the discarded material which builds our dreams and fantasies. These directly and indirectly confront us with the boundaries of illusion and that which lays on its other side. The Backstage is the mind’s warehouse, holding that which we wish not to see.
