This video work, set in a stadium, presents Olympic athletes in action. Clad in grotesque and geometric costumes, the athletes appear to be engaging in a surreal version of the Olympic games gone awry. The combination between an athletic appearance highlighting a physical ideal and the grotesque is linked to various commonplace aesthetic trends, which were ideologically opposed to one another and which rose to prominence in the 1930s.
The Victory of the Rising Sun references propaganda films of fascist regimes from the 20th century, as well as modern movements whose ideologies spun out of control as they attempted to create a so-called new man in a new society.
