In the Future I Shall Live a Great Deal in this Room”
In one of the most iconic scenes of early Hollywood films, Greta Garbo, as Queen Christina in the film of the same name (1933) is seen walking inside the room where she experienced true love for the first time in her life. She caresses the walls and the furniture while explaining to her lover: “I am memorizing this room. In the future, I will Shall live a great deal in this room.”
Learning or acquiring a memory, as this exhibition suggests, aren’t just cognitive actions but also physical ones. The body remembers, it is a living archive – and its expressions of remembrance are also physical and sensory. “In the Future I shall Live a Great Deal in This Room” deals with the performative gestures of the body that remembers, the body that stores a dormant memory of sensations and feelings, the body that yearns to reawaken these sentiments and bring them closer to the consciousness and the soul.
The exhibition marks the NGO A Studio of Her Own’s relaunching at its new residence near Hansen House, at the home of the late painter Pinchas Litvinovsky. It grapples with different expressions of physical memories, which are reflected in artworks by some of Israel’s leading female artists.
