The virtual world is perceived by many as a metaphysical and abstract space to which we escape. But reality is different. The environmental implications and resources required to maintain it take a heavy toll on the planet. A 1-megabyte email consumes in its life cycle an amount of energy equal to 20 minutes of using a 60W incandescent lightbulb.

The DATA Tree is a living garden that combines the virtual and physical worlds in order to reflect the transparent digital energy consumption.

We invite visitors to be active partners in the garden and to take part in the discussion about our daily use of virtual means, as well as their impact on energy consumption in the physical world we live in.

This project was carried out as part of the Incubator project, a program for graduates of the Bezalel Acadmy of Art and Design’s Department of Industrial Design.
