The word ‘’Normal’ derives from the Latin Norma, which originally referred to a carpenter’s bar. The bar (ruler) represents the set of rules and accepted values established by the hegemonic group in our culture; there is a normal temperature, normal height and normal mental state. Normal is the ordinary, the average, that which is placed far from the margins.

Akuma is a set of new measurement tools, each of which responds to a specific axiom as defined by Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic drawing, The Vitruvian Man (1490). This canonical work, showing the ideal proportions of the human body, has had a strong influence on the perception of body image in Western culture. The work is accompanied by 17 axioms, describing the ideal proportions between different body parts. By doing so, Akuma wishes to challenge the familiar measurement methods and undermines existing social conventions.
